What We Do Our unique Puppy Program selectively breeds and prepares puppies to be future explosive detection dogs within the National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program. We are located at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Our program depends on volunteer families within the San Antonio and Austin communities! We foster our puppies to families from the time the pups are nine weeks until 12 months. During this time we ask our foster families to supply the pups with a well rounded, socialized and nurturing environment. To help, there is a simple puppy raising guide book and an enclosed diary for keeping notes on the pups' progress.
We supply all the food, equipment and medical care for the pups. We are available any time if a question or emergency should arise. The pups are returned to us a few days each month for a medical and behavioral evaluation and to conduct necessary training if needed. At approximately 12 months of age, the pups are returned to the Puppy Program for their final training and evaluations. Upon successful completion of the Puppy Program the pups are transferred into official explosive detection training at the TSA Support Branch.
Program History The Puppy Program began in 1999, before TSA was created. We are modeled after the Australian Customs Service Puppy Program, a successful breeding program of working detection dogs. The Australians donated six adult females and two adult males to establish our breeding stock. Later, they contributed a total of 17 puppies to the program. Our first breeding occurred in March 2002, and produced "A" litter, and we are now on our second time through the alphabet. To date, we have produced over 175 puppies with the newest puppies being our second "F" litter. Our on-site breeding stock now consist of 17 females, and we use males from breeders across the U.S. and from our breeding program.
